15-day tour from Tangier: the Atlantic coast, the Anti-Atlas and imperial cities

Duration
15 days
Departure from
Tangier
Type
Private
Price
from 750 €

Description

Fifteen days along the Atlantic. This is our longest itinerary from Tangier and also the most coastal: it follows the shore down to Sidi Ifni, turns inland into the Anti-Atlas and then climbs back towards the imperial cities, closing the loop in Tangier. It includes neither a desert leg nor a night under canvas — Merzouga can be added on request between Marrakech and Fes, but it is not part of this programme.

The ocean is the thread running through it: Asilah and its murals, Rabat, the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, two nights in Essaouira between ramparts and fishing harbour, Agadir, then Sidi Ifni, a former Spanish enclave of Art Deco houses, with Legzira beach and its red rock arches. From there the road climbs to Tafraout, among pink granite and Berber villages, and continues to Marrakech, the Ouzoud waterfalls, Fes and Chefchaouen.

The pacing is deliberately soft: two nights each in Essaouira, Sidi Ifni, Marrakech and Fes, with free time at every stop. Only two driving days are long, Rabat to Essaouira and Ouzoud to Fes, at five to seven hours; the rest run between two and four. Well suited to families and to a first discovery of Morocco.

Tour itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Tangier:

Begin your journey in Tangier, the northern gateway to Morocco, where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic. Explore the Kasbah, enjoy the panoramic views from Café Hafa and walk along the Corniche as the seagulls fly overhead. Tangier’s blend of European and Moroccan influences creates a vibrant, eclectic atmosphere.

Day 2

Tangier > Asilah > Rabat:

Head down the coast to Asilah, a peaceful seaside town known for its artistic murals, whitewashed walls and quiet medina. After a relaxing walk through its picturesque streets, continue south to Rabat, Morocco’s elegant capital. Visit the Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, and enjoy the Atlantic breeze at the Kasbah of the Udayas. You cover this first long leg south with one of our drivers, Ahmed or another of our team, and you decide the stops along the coast together.

Day 3

Rabat > Casablanca > Essaouira:

Today’s journey takes you to Casablanca, the modern heart of Morocco. Stop to visit the iconic Hassan II Mosque, one of the largest and most breathtaking in the world. Then continue along the Atlantic coast to Essaouira, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its relaxed atmosphere, its ramparts and its fishing port.

Day 4

Exploring Essaouira:

Enjoy a full day in the magical coastal town of Essaouira. Walk through its peaceful medina, explore the Skala de la Ville and watch the lively activity at the port. Don’t miss the chance to taste fresh seafood and hear the rhythm of Gnaoua music echoing through the lanes.

Day 5

Essaouira > Agadir:

Head south to Agadir, a modern seaside city rebuilt after the 1960 earthquake. Enjoy the palm-lined avenues, relax on the sandy beach or admire the panoramic views from the Agadir Oufella Kasbah. It is a perfect place to recharge.

Day 6

Agadir > Sidi Ifni:

Travel along the wild Atlantic coast to Sidi Ifni, a former Spanish enclave known for its Art Deco architecture, relaxed atmosphere and dramatic cliffs. Stop at Legzira Beach, famous for its red rock arches. Spend the night enjoying the ocean breeze in this off-the-beaten-track coastal town.

Day 7

A day discovering Sidi Ifni:

Slow down and soak up the beauty of Sidi Ifni. Walk through its quiet streets, chat with local people at the market and let yourself be mesmerised by the ocean view. It is an ideal place to switch off and reflect.

Day 8

Sidi Ifni > Tafraout:

Leave the coast behind and head inland into the Anti-Atlas mountains towards Tafraout. This hidden gem is known for its surreal pink granite rocks, lush palm valleys and Berber villages. Along the way, admire the ever-changing landscapes as they shift from coast to rocky terrain.

Day 9

Tafraout > Marrakech:

Cross the mountains and reach Marrakech, the “Red City”. On arrival, you are greeted by the energy, colours and buzz of the city. Check in at your riad and relax after the journey.

Day 10

Marrakech city tour:

Spend a full day discovering the wonders of Marrakech:
Visit the Majorelle Garden and the Berber Museum
Immerse yourself in the buzz of Jemaa el-Fnaa square
Wander the narrow souks full of spices, lamps and leather
Explore the Bahia Palace and the Koutoubia Mosque
At sunset, enjoy a rooftop dinner overlooking the medina.

Day 11

Marrakech > Ouzoud waterfalls:

Escape into nature with a trip to the Ouzoud waterfalls, among the highest in North Africa. Walk down to the base for a close-up view, spot the monkeys and perhaps take a boat ride. Staying overnight in the area lets you enjoy the peace of the surroundings.

Day 12

Ouzoud waterfalls > Fes:

Travel north-east through Middle Atlas landscapes of cedar forests, mountain passes and Berber towns to Fes, the oldest imperial city in Morocco. Settle into your traditional riad and get ready to immerse yourself in history.

Discover the magic of Fes el-Bali, the ancient fortified medina and UNESCO site. The highlights include:
The Al-Qarawiyyin University (the oldest in the world)
The Chouara tannery
The Bou Inania Madrasa
And the gates of the Royal Palace
Lose yourself in the maze of lanes, where donkeys carry goods and artisans keep traditions alive.

Day 14

Fes > Chefchaouen (the Blue City of Morocco):

Leave Fes and head into the Rif Mountains to reach Chefchaouen, the beautiful Blue City. Its peaceful atmosphere and blue-washed lanes are a complete contrast to the busy cities. It is perfect for photography lovers and anyone looking for serenity.

Day 15
