New Year is the most sought-after time of the year for a trip to Morocco. The reason is simple: in just a few days you go from the lively squares of Marrakech or the alleyways of the Fes medina to the silence of the Sahara.
The night of 31 December is spent in a tented camp among the dunes, with dinner, a fire and Berber music under a sky full of stars.
How New Year is celebrated in the desert
A typical programme has you reaching the desert on the afternoon of 31 December, a camel ride at sunset towards the camp, the end-of-year dinner and the evening around the fire with the drums. On the morning of 1 January you climb the dunes to watch the first sunrise of the new year, before setting off again.
The two main destinations are:
Merzouga and Erg Chebbi
The highest and most spectacular dunes in Morocco, reached in 3–4 days from Marrakech or in 2–3 days from Fes.
Zagora
The desert closest to Marrakech, ideal if you are short of time, with a 2-day tour via Aït Ben Haddou and the Draa Valley.
Which tour to choose for New Year
Two nights in the desert
With the 4-day tour you spend two nights in the desert and take a 4×4 trip between Khamlia and the nomads.
Closer from Fes
From Fes the desert is closer: the 3-day return tour lets you spend two nights in Merzouga.
If you land in Fes and fly home from Marrakech, you can choose a one-way itinerary, with New Year halfway through the trip.
What to pack for the desert in December

Frequently asked questions about New Year in Morocco
What is the weather like in Morocco at New Year?
During the day it is pleasant: in Marrakech and in the desert it often goes above 15-18 °C. At night, though, it is cold, especially in the desert, where the temperature can drop to around 0 °C: bring a warm jacket, a hat and warm layers.
When should you book New Year 2027 or 2028?
As early as possible: the week between Christmas and 6 January is the busiest of the year and the desert camps fill up weeks in advance. For New Year 2027 it is best to book by October or November; for New Year 2028 you can already secure the dates with a deposit.
Is the desert camp heated?
The tents have heavy blankets, and the higher-category camps have roomier tents with a private bathroom. When you book, we tell you which options are available for the night of 31 December.
How many days do you need to spend New Year in the desert?
From Marrakech, 2 days are enough for the Zagora desert, while the great dunes of Merzouga need at least 3 days. From Fes, Merzouga is closer: 2 or 3 days are enough.
Can you celebrate New Year in Marrakech too?
Yes: many travellers spend a few days in Marrakech before or after the desert. We can arrange your arrival, the desert tour and the return to the city in a single itinerary.
