Description
Spending a night at a desert camp in Merzouga is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that captures the magic of the Moroccan Sahara. Set on the edge of the vast Erg Chebbi dunes, Merzouga is an unforgettable gateway to the desert’s golden sands, far from busy cities and the noise of modern life.
The adventure usually begins in the late afternoon, when travellers head into the dunes by camel or by 4×4. As you move across the sands, the shifting colours of the dunes at sunset create a beautiful scene that feels almost unreal. The peaceful silence of the desert is reassuring, and the warm golden light makes for perfect photos and lasting memories.
On arrival at the camp, visitors are welcomed with traditional Moroccan mint tea and warm hospitality. Camps range from basic to luxurious, with tents made from traditional materials yet offering modern comforts such as private bathrooms, electricity and cosy beds. Some camps even have Wi-Fi and hot showers, combining comfort with authenticity.
The camps you sleep in are our own: Mouhou Camp and Camel Trips Camp, both pitched among the Erg Chebbi dunes. They are the same category and in both the tent has its own private bathroom: when you book we tell you which of the two you are going to, so you know what to expect on arrival.
As evening falls, the desert reveals its magic. A delicious Moroccan dinner is served, often based on tagine, couscous and freshly baked bread. After the meal, local Berber musicians play drums and sing traditional songs around the fire, creating a joyful atmosphere. Guests are invited to dance, sing or simply relax under the stars.
Standard camp
The classic standard nomad camps of Merzouga offer travellers a unique opportunity to experience the traditional Berber way of life in the heart of the Sahara desert. These camps are designed for maximum comfort while keeping an authentic desert atmosphere. Set among the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi, they feature cosy private tents made from camel wool and local materials.
Each tent is furnished with basic bedding, rugs and small tables, creating a warm and rustic atmosphere. Most classic camps have shared bathrooms, although some offer upgraded tents with private facilities. Guests can enjoy traditional Moroccan cuisine, often served around a communal fire under the stars.
Evening entertainment includes Berber drumming, storytelling and stargazing, which make the desert nights magical. During the day, guests can go camel trekking, sandboarding or on 4×4 excursions among the dunes. The peaceful setting and the simple way of life offer a welcome break from the modern world.
Classic standard nomad camps are ideal for those who want to immerse themselves in the culture and natural beauty of the Sahara without luxury prices. They offer an affordable and memorable experience rooted in tradition, hospitality and breathtaking desert landscapes. A stay in one of these camps is the highlight of any visit to Merzouga.
Luxury camp
For travellers looking for comfort and authenticity, luxury desert camps with a private bathroom are the perfect choice. These camps blend traditional Berber charm with modern comforts, offering spacious tents with comfortable beds, electricity, air conditioning or heating and en-suite bathrooms with hot showers and toilets. The luxury option also keeps you at one of our own camps, Mouhou Camp or Camel Trips Camp: the difference that counts is the private bathroom inside the tent, not the name of the camp.
Private bathrooms add an extra level of convenience and hygiene, which is especially important for families, couples and travellers on long journeys. After a camel excursion or a 4×4 tour among the golden dunes, guests can return to their elegant tent for a hot shower and relax under the starry sky around a fire.
Many luxury camps offer local music, Moroccan cuisine, sandboarding and guided excursions to nearby nomad villages. The peaceful desert atmosphere, combined with personalised service, creates a magical and comfortable stay.
Whether you are planning a romantic escape, a family adventure or a solo retreat, the luxury camps of Merzouga with a private bathroom guarantee every traveller a unique, safe and memorable Sahara experience.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between standard and luxury camps in Merzouga?
Standard camps offer basic tents with shared bathrooms and limited facilities.
Luxury camps offer en-suite bathrooms, comfortable beds, electricity, heating and cooling, and gourmet meals for a more refined experience.
Are meals included in the camp stay?
Absolutely. Both types include dinner and breakfast, usually Moroccan cuisine. Luxury camps often serve higher-quality or gourmet options.
Are the tents private?
Yes, every group or booking has a private tent in both standard and luxury camps. Only the bathrooms may be shared in standard camps.
How do you reach the desert camp?
Guests are usually taken by camel or by 4×4 from the village of Merzouga. Luxury options often include 4×4 transfers both ways for extra comfort. At the wheel is one of our drivers — Omar or another of the team — who knows the way through the dunes even after dark.
Is August a bad month for sleeping in the camp?
August is very hot and sandstorms are possible. When one blows up, the night is not spent at the camp: we move you into a hotel instead. It is the question everyone asks us in summer, and we would rather answer it before you book.
